Disciple your kids (part 2)

Last month I shared about discipling our kids by being a model who lives a life that gives and sacrifices. Today, I want to share other tips and resources that might be helpful to you:

  1. Devotion with you kids
Find time to have devotions with your kids is a powerful way to instill the biblical values in your child. Devotion as a family, in fact, helps us to discipline ourselves too. When we put asides our busy chores for a while but to focus on God’s Word on a regular basis, that can help our kids to form a habit to spend time with God and prioritize Him first.

Also, even though we have very good curriculums in Sunday School and Worships, daily bible time with parents is still the best and a most solid way to build up their foundation.

Through telling bible stories, we can connect with our kids in many ways too. I still remember how my kids and I talked about resurrection, sins, forgiveness and many other big concepts at those nights. Living in a world that blurs the line between right and wrong, our ongoing conversation with our kids is an essential part in their spiritual lives now.

  2. Pray with them and for them without cease
Passing biblical knowledge and sharing intentional conversation in our devotional time are indeed meaningful, however, what makes our faith journey strong and personal is prayers. When we pray to God with our kids, we are inviting them to enter into our journeys so we can experience God’s wonders together.

Beside praying with them, we should always pray for them in our personal prayer life. I always believe that is the most precious gift parents can give to their children. My mom, at 90 now, has been living far apart from me. However, she prays for me and other siblings every night. I know I’m well covered by her prayers. What a love gift to give that goes beyond physical and spatial limitations.

  3. Build up a community
If it takes a community to raise a kid, it takes a village or more to raise a Godly kid. God’s children have always been a minority in this world and you will find it increasingly challenging to have your kids follow through our Christ.

Therefore, parents, don’t do this job alone. Instead, you should build up a community with other Christian families at schools and at your church. Volunteering at the community as a Sunday School teacher/ a helper, or a song leader at children worship is a good way to build up and to integrate into a community. In this way, your family gets to know others and your kids can grow up together with others. Friendship is always a strong network to protect us from drifting away.

I hope all these tips can help you. I here also provided you some useful websites as your teaching or devotional resources. Of course, BAC Children Ministry is a handy resource for you too. Don’t hesitate to connect with me or Cheryl if you have any question or need extra support.
