“The problem with eye sight”

The process of discipleship is a process of vision correction.

Last week I share about our “spiritual reality”. Sometimes we need to correct how we see ourselves and others.

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. (Matthew 7:3-5)

Many people only see what they like to see, and only listen to what they like to hear. When it comes to this passage people can abuse this by saying, “See! Don’t judge what I’m doing!”, but the key to this passage is asking you to reflect on yourself, not to use it for shutting other people up!

It is true that as we look at others and the world, it is so easy to comment on and  judge another’s action. To use what we know as a measurement for others, as opposed to measuring our being and action.

Discipleship is not merely about knowing, but about being. “First take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” Unless our lives have experienced transformation from Jesus, it’s hard to teach others about the way of Jesus. If we are experiencing the transformation of Jesus, it humbles us and helps us see our true self. The result? We will be less prone to judge, or be harsh on others too quickly.
