Lord if you are willing, you can make me clean

When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said,  “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. (Matt. 8:1-3)

Picture this: The pastor (Jesus) just preached the greatest sermon there ever was  (“Sermon on the Mount”, Matthew 5-7), the crowd was amazed (Matt. 7:28), and was cheering behind him as they followed. What could be next? What would they be looking forward to? On a typical Sunday, that would be lunch!

But out came a leprosy, how inconvenient!

Let me ask you a question: who was more blessed? The crowd who just heard the great teaching of Jesus? Or the leper who probably was NOT there (he would have been rejected by the crowd), but heard about Jesus and His power?

The answer would be obvious – the one who experienced the power of Jesus. Yet many people are happy to just hear good teaching and go about their day…. Unchanged.

But “blessed are the poor in spirit” (Matt. 5:3) – those who know of their condition and need.

And “those who mourn” (Matt. 5:4) – who are feeling sad about the situation.

And “the meek” (Matt. 5:5) – those who realize they can’t fix themselves by just knowing more, but are humble enough to kneel before him and say, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Listen to these beautiful words from Jesus, “I am willing. Be clean!” God’s words are powerful and life transforming – don’t just settle with listening to them, kneel before him and ask, seek, knock - experience.
