Continued from last week: “Consecration” and “Holiness”

Previously, we learned that “holiness” will not pass on to other things through different mediums.  Even though the fold of a garment would become consecrated as a result of carrying consecrated meat, items being touched by the fold of that garment would not be consecrated.  On the other hand, “defilement” is pervasive.  Anything that has been touched will become unclean without exception. Even consecrated items would be considered unclean once they had contact with defiled items.  Thus, we see in the Old Testament a clear picture of the nature of “holiness” and “defilement”.  However, this can just be head knowledge.  How about in practice?  Will God (who is holy) become “unclean” after He meets with a sinful man or Satan?

Scripture has brought us to another level of understanding of “holiness”. “Holiness” is not only meant to be a moral or value system, indeed it is the power and divine nature of God himself.  “Holiness” has the absolute power to exclude and eliminate “defilement”.  That means that which is “defiled” would be destroyed even before it has a chance to come in contact with “holiness”.  In the Bible, we can find several examples:

“Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death.  They are to be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person or animal shall be permitted to live.’ Only when the ram’s horn sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain.”       (Exodus 19:12-13)

and the Lord said to him, “Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see the Lord and many of them perish.  Even the priests, who approach the Lord, must consecrate themselves, or the Lord will break out against them.”       (Exodus 19:21-22)

Likewise, all the burnt offerings had to be sacrificed in the exact way God commanded, so that they would be accepted by God; that is, to be killed and burnt. No wonder that for those who had met with God, their response was one of great fear.  The parents of Samson met with the angel of the Lord, and their immediate response was “We are doomed to die!” he said to his wife. “We have seen God!” (Judges 13:22)

Therefore, the “holiness” of God is extremely fearful in the eyes of a defiled sinner.

When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.” 20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”  (Exodus 20:18-20)

In the New Testament we are instructed to approach God in similar fashion:   “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.”   (Hebrews 12:28-29)
