Continued from last week: “Consecration” and “Holiness”

It is such a huge blessing that our defilement and shame can be covered by the righteousness and holiness of Jesus Christ.  Yet if we move away from Christ, we will lose all and return to the former disgrace. Then how can we respond to the Scripture: “Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”? (Hebrews 12:14)

“For it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” (1 Peters 1:16) From the bottom of our hearts, we hope that we could be as holy as God.  This idea of hoping to be as holy as God sounds very ideal, yet we have made exactly the same mistake as the church in Galatia: trying to be holy by our own strength and effort, and not with Christ’s.

“I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard?  Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?  Have you experienced so much in vain—if it really was in vain?” (Galatians 3:2-4)

If we have heard and believed the gospel of salvation, we would be sealed by the Holy Spirit, and be hidden in Jesus Christ (Eph. 1:13).  In Him, we are made righteous and sanctified. Apart from Him, all attempts on our part to achieve are futile. We must stay in Him!

Holiness is the divine nature of God, it is not a kind of knowledge that can be achieved by learning; nor a skill that can be attained by practice. Mankind can admire, adore, look up to the holiness of God, even do our best to imitate it, but we would never be able to “squeeze out” a bit of holiness. This is like the moon. It cannot illuminate on its own.  The only thing it can do is to move out from the shadow of the earth, and let the light of the sun shine on it, so that in return, it can shine brightly by reflecting the light of the sun. Christians are the same. They cannot become holy by themselves, but they can become holy if they are hidden in Christ. This hiding within Christ is not temporary, it’s everlasting, but if we choose to leave and get away from Christ, we will return back to the defilement we used to be. Therefore, Jesus told the disciples:

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.  If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.” (John 15:5-6)
